Let us muse again today from John 17:15 and the high priestly prayer. In the prayer of our Lord today we find that He remarks about the security for lovers of the word. He prays that they should not be taken out of the world but only that we might be kept from the evil. The word keep means to keep an eye on or to be a sentry or soldier of watch about them. The evil speaks of a person and literally means the worthless one, the depraved one, or the wicked one. Surely He prays here of keeping us from the devil himself. Long before we knew we had a problem with Satan our Lord had prayed a hedge of protection about us.
