Let us begin today to muse from Amos chapter 4 and some sins we overlook. In verses 1-2 the first sin Amos deals with is the sin of luxury. Luxury is a desire for the possessions of things above and beyond that which is needed. Many of the nations of the world see what we consider as a necessity to them is a luxury. In verse one he calls the women of that day who were living in luxury a kine or heifer. If this terminology was used today by preachers they would be run all. The cows of Bashan were known for their beauty. These ladies were using their wealth as a stepping stone to crush down the poor. In verse two God said he would put a cattle hook in their lip and lead them away into captivity. The sin of luxury does not come when we own a lot of possession but when our possessions own us and a person’s success is judged by how much stuff they owns.
